After seven years as a physical education teacher, Tim McNeil had a career change in 1996 and decided to study winemaking. Fast forward several years, and after stints at Jim Barry Wines and Kilikanoon, Tim released his first Riesling and Shiraz in 2007. In the same year, he and wife Cass purchased a 40 acre vineyard with Riesling vines in Springvale Rd, Watervale, and in 2010 Tim’s first Watervale Rieslings were produced from the vineyard.
The McNeil’s Watervale vineyard reflects a special environment – cool southerly breezes, 450m elevation, consistent rainfall and beautiful terra rossa soil – all these elements combine to produce a perfect environment for Riesling grapes. The vines are dry-grown, handpruned and handpicked in keeping with a nurturing and traditional philosophy to grapegrowing and winemaking.
Tim McNeil Wines was listed as one of the ‘Ten Dark Horses’ in the 2019 Halliday Wine Companion.
