Mermerus Vineyard, originally a dairy farm, was purchased by Paul and Jennifer Champion in 1995. Fresh from overseas travel and yearning for a country life, they began planting vines in 1996. To this day, their elegant wines remain estate made and grown, and are truly reflective of their terroir.
Blessed with a cool maritime climate, and utilising traditional labour-intensive winemaking techniques such as hand pruning, weed control with their small breed Southdown sheep, and indigenous (wild) yeast fermentation, results in wines that retain their intense and delicate fruit characters and display length and drinkability.
‘Our aim is to make the best wine possible from our site and treat the land with respect for future generations’ – winemaker Paul Champion.
